Kansas Man Arrested for Threatening With his Home Defense Gun

The Wichita Kansas Eagle reports on another one of those extremely rare cases: homeowner with a gun uses it wrongly.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion aggravated assault after pointing a gun at a 20-year-old man and threatening to kill him “if he said another word,” police said.

The incident occurred at 1:05 a.m. Saturday.

The suspect first broke out a window of his home in the 700 block of South Oliver, put a black revolver through the window and yelled at two men next door to stop talking. One of the victims ran to the front of the house, where he was met by the suspect who threatened to kill him if he said anything more, police said.
A homeowner in Kansas who gets upset at the noisy neighbors and threatens them with a gun, could very well be a CCW permit holder. But no one is checking on that. Whether he has a carry permit or not has nothing to do with this story. It does, however, have plenty to do with the outlandish low percentages they keep telling us of concealed carry guys who act badly.

In many cases crimes like this one, which are clearly indicative of unfitness, get plea bargained down to nothing. And our hero continues to own and abuse his guns.

What's your opinion? Is that reading too much into the story?

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that most people that have a CCW don't carry Black Powder Revolvers. There might be one or two out of millions but I seriously doubt this idiot had a CCW.

Now, I think there is more to the story. How many black powder revolvers did the guy have on him? Were the men that were assaulted Kansas Red Legs? Maybe the homeowner next door was from Missouri. Did anyone notice if he had a mangy redbone hound and Cherokee Chief riding with him?

    1. I don't get why black powder guns and the CCW permit would be mutually exclusive.

    2. This subject is debated in the concealed carry community. I could point you to a discussion, if you wish--it includes one downright hilarious story about a man who did carry a black powder revovler. The argument is over whether such a design is reliable enough to protect one's life these days. They certainly did a lot of business in the years gone by, but as Lucky Ned Pepper told Mattie Ross, the older designs can embarrass you in a tight spot.

I did check the news article, though, and all it says is a black gun. That doesn't have to mean black powder. It's probably just a blued steel handgun.

    3. I'm not suggesting that CCW permit holders carry their black-powder guns. I'm saying that passionate gun lovers would often want to own black-powder in addition to their carry piece.

    4. True enough. My first firearm was a blackpowder muzzleloading revovler. I've collected more from there.

  2. Are you reading too much into the story? YES! Clear enough for you? Your argument is as follows:

    1. We have no evidence that this man has a carry license.

    2. It's irrelevant to the story, anyway.

    3. But regardless, this is evidence that licensees are bad.

    Huh?

  3. I thought my point was clear. The tiny percentage of CCW permit holders who fuck up is not comprehensive.

    1. Mikeb, that's what you believe, but you have no evidence to support your position. Your point was clear, and I showed you what it was.
